I can't imagine why No-one has jumped on this one. I know there's a lot of issues, but some tasty gating and eq can really make the drums shine. [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/the-real-japancakes/children-of-no-one[/soundcloud]

Great track, here are my thoughts on the mixs.

S1770: Great mix but the drums sound a little bit boxy imo however I love the left handedness of the tom positioning :). really like the vocal sound and it all sits well together in the mix.

japancakes: wow great mix dude, the snare sounds really punchy and present, everything is very well balanced and clear.

I Love the whole vibe of this track, gonna give it a download.

Hi guys,
I'm new here, love the idea of this website.

@S1770 ... i think you catched the mood very good. Drum could move a bit in the background .. listen to the toms specially. I like the set, but not the Kick of it :)

@ japancakes ... superclean. I like the Guitar that are a bit on the mushy side, many mids overall. A bit more sub to compensate? I like! Drums quite sterile ... i'd prefer much rougher. Samplereplacement?

@ on the rock ... pretty bassheavy and dry. I like

Cheers

Replacing drums is a peeve of mine. I never do it.

Whow. You truely know how to handle Dynamics then :)

The snare was the only part of the kit with compression. I used a Rev D 1176. There was no drum bus compression. Master bus had a Pendulum ES8 Vari Mu > Pendulum PL2 and then I clipped by +4 into t... (read more)

Thank you for clearing that. I dont even know the sourcefiles. I thought the roughstuff of the other Mixes are nearly unprocessed :)
You're absolutely right with the EQ.

The OHs are useless as is the center room mic. I used the rooms as overheads and time aligned them to the snare transients. They sounded more like OHs than rooms anyway.
.:On The Rock:.
The imaging was bad in the overheads, but I adjusted the volume of one side to try and make it better. I used the mono room and crushed it with Devil-Loc Deluxe. I narrowed out the drum image a bit... (read more)

The OHs just sounded horrible. Lots of room and tom resonance. I can hear that stuff junking up your mix .:On The Rock:.

It's probably why your guitars are so quiet relative to everything else. The drums are masking the mids on the guitars.

Guys,
if something is overcompressed, gated reverb and precise limiting with short release times will help to bring life into the track :)
I will try to mix this up and we will see if I can do some magic with that :)

EDIT: This is really good old-sound song. Somewhere around 70'. Great job, S1770!
If you want to get this oldskool sound from 70', you have to use tube preamps and old optical compression elements. And saturators, harmonic exciters etc. And make the sound not tooooo bright (in the 70' there were 4track tape machines, where  everything had been mixed at about 100Hz-16kHz)
