Rock/Pop mix off - sounds a bit like the Police.

Hi Folks,
This is the first time I've posted a track here, so apologies if it's in the wrong place or anything!

This is a track from my band's forthcoming album. We've been mixing it ourselves so far, but we were wondering if it would be worth us hiring a mixing engineer. I can post our effort at mixing it, if that's of any use to anyone?

All tracks are 16bit 44.1 kHz wavs, mostly mono but a few stereo.

Download size is 117MB and here's the link:

Thanks for looking/listening, have fun with it!  :)

Great song. Wiltshire77. I'll be in. ;-)

A quick question.... Is your drummer left handed?

Thanks crtjstr! He's not, or at least as far as I can remember he's not - he certainly plays right handed in any case.
Is the reason you ask the overheads? I think the left and right are orient... (read more)

No worries! I always ask now, because one time I "fixed" them, and then it turned out to be a left handed drummer. Lol.

Haven't mixed anything for a long time but came up with this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23688706/timeeforchange.mp3
Guitars were easy, but the drums and vox I struggled with.. Nice song!

Thanks! I like your mix, very nicely balanced - I like the thing you've done with the guitars being quieter in the verses too - an interesting take on it! The drums sound remarkably similar to how ... (read more)

Well, for some reason I had to fight with the snare a lot to get it sounding somewhat ok. Tom's were hard to too

Hi wiltshire77  :) I've just downloaded the track - really like the song and the sound. Like you say, very reminiscent of The Police. I will have a go at mixing this hopefully at some point this week and post back to the forum.

I managed to find the album cover that you were using previously on this.

Let me know what you think. If you have any notes or revisions, I would love to hear them.

Here's my mix and master. Really enjoyed working with this track :) There was a fair amount of cymbal spill on the snare track but it was a nice challenge to find ways to tame it in the mix. Hope you like it.

Feel free to get in contact if you want any mixing done :)

Edit - updated the link with a revision. Some of the guitars were out of phase so I've corrected that and I've made a few minor adjustments to the guitar, overheads and snare eq. I also changed the mastering settings slightly (engaged the RMS comp in LimiterNo6 with very subtle settings). I also lowered the vocals by around 1.5 dB as in the OP you state the vocalist prefers vocals lower in the mix - this afforded the opportunity to experiment with the vocal compressor - I ended up backing off a few settings which resulted in a slightly more dynamic performance.

Lots of issues in this mix. Woolly bass tone, too much vocal esses, general lack of midrange fullness. My best critique I can give you is: Mix with extremely quiet levels (volume of keyboard type) ... (read more)
